Can I used dried gnocchi?

Yes, but add more liquid during the cooking process. The gnocchi will need to be rehydrated more and you will need to adjust as you go, adding small amounts of water or chicken broth until the gnocchi is just right and the dish is still saucy but not runny.

Why is the cheese in a separate bag?

Cheese will have its best affect on the dish if it is stirred in after the cooking process. If the cheese is soaked in the liquid and cooked in the dish, you risk curdling.

Can I use other types of sausage?

Yes. If you want to use a something like a spicy chorizo sausage, for instance, it will work. It will completely change the flavor of the dish but it will still work. You can also adjust the heat level by choosing one of the different levels of Italian sausage. At our market, I can find mild, original, medium, and hot varieties. Any of these will work.

One Pot Creamy Sausage Gnocchi Recipe Ideas

If your family doesn’t like sausage, you could use diced ham, or cooked ground beef. If you choose to use ground beef, you may need to add extra seasoning. This sauce would also work with chicken. You could even go meat free!

Are you a fan of higher veggie content, or you have more mouths to feed? Try adding sliced yellow squash or sliced zucchini. Your family may also really enjoy mushrooms in this dish. If you add any of these ingredients, be sure to also add one or two more cloves of garlic.

If you want to add a little more tanginess and interest to the cheese flavor, use a Parmesan Romano cheese blend. It will bump up the flavor without making the dish stringy. If you love a good cheesy texture, add an Italian cheese mixture instead of the parmesan.

If the hottest variety of sausage is still not enough, try adding red pepper flakes, diced seeded jalepenos, or a green hot sauce.

The recipe could so easily be turned into a rose sauce – just add a couple of tablespoons of leftover marinara sauce or crushed tomatoes to the sauce when it is nearly done cooking. Taste to adjust the amount and your sauce is now just a little bit different than it was the last time you served this particular meal.

How do I store One Pot Creamy Sausage Gnocchi?

Leftovers must be refrigerated. Use airtight containers and use up the leftovers within two or three days. This dish can be reheated in the microwave or in a skillet. You may need to add a little water to rehydrate the gnocchi. If using a skillet, and you need water, add a lid.

What to Serve with One Pot Creamy Sausage Gnocchi

Our homemade frozen garlic bread is one of our favorite things to serve with this meal. You’ll also enjoy a fresh salad, fruit, or roasted veggies.

You know what else would go well with this? A Caprese salad with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and balsamic vinegar glaze. Simple, easy to make, and a bright contrast to our creamy pasta. To be fair, you really don’t need to serve anything at all with this dish though. It’s a one pot meal and is both comforting and filling on its own!
