Can you freeze slow cooker meals?
Yes! Slow cooker meals are the perfect pairing for freezer meals. Making the meal ahead saves time and money and being able to cook it in the crock pot means getting dinner on the table is practically done for you.
Simply assemble the meal in a gallon-size freezer bag, remove as much air as possible, and freeze. Then on the day of cooking, thaw and set it in the slow cooker.
Once you start to meal prep this way, you won’t want to go back to the old way of having to cook dinner every night from scratch ever again!
Can I put a freezer meal straight into the crock pot?
A freezer meal can go directly in the slow cooker from the freezer, however, there are a few things to consider.
Most recipes are designed to be thawed first so the cooking instructions are made accordingly. You will need to adjust cooking times if you put the meal in while fully frozen, particularly if there is raw meat involved to ensure cooking safety. Be sure to use a meat thermometer to ensure that you achieve the right temperature.
If your meals are frozen in square or rectangular bags or containers, they won’t fit in the crockpot while fully frozen. You can solve this problem very easily by placing the bag or container in a sink of room temperature water for 20 minutes. This will thaw the contents and allow you to dump them into the slow cooker. The same is true for making meals ahead for the Instant Pot.
Is there Anything I Can’t Freeze?
Most ingredients freeze well, but there are some notable exceptions. We have a handy full printable list of what freezes well, what doesn’t, and how best to freeze things. You can even print it out for easy reference.
